Winchester

Winchester, Massachusetts is an attractive suburban town located about eight miles north of downtown Boston in Middlesex County. With a population of approximately 22,900 residents, Winchester is known for its picturesque neighborhoods, strong public schools, and charming town center. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Winchester’s population was 22,862, and the town has remained a highly desirable residential community within the greater Boston area.

Winchester was incorporated in 1850, formed from portions of Medford, Woburn, Arlington, and Cambridge. The town was named after Colonel William P. Winchester, a local businessman and philanthropist who donated land for the railroad station that helped drive early development. The arrival of the railroad made Winchester one of the early commuter suburbs for professionals working in Boston.

An interesting historical tidbit about Winchester is its connection to the early ice trade. During the nineteenth century, ice harvested from the Mystic Lakes was cut into blocks and shipped to cities across the country and even overseas. Before modern refrigeration, this natural ice industry was a major business throughout New England.
